The FCM equips students with an integrative approach to counselling in order to help others find healing and restoration. The Foundations for Counselling Ministry is an opportunity to be equipped to bring wholeness to individuals and communities in need. 

The lecture phase is a three-month classroom segment that utilizes lectures, discussions, workshops, group discussions, skills practice and personal study. During our lecture phase, the students will learn different approaches to counselling & psychotherapy (Christian and secular). Our approach to counselling has an intentional focus on addressing community needs. This means we look at issues, not just affecting the individual, but also the communities in which they live. God cares for the whole person and for what this means for those around them as well. 

Topics include: Loss and bereavement, trauma, abuse, addiction, ethics and professional issues, counselling from a Christian perspective, theoretical models of counselling, counselling skills and practice, a perspective of the therapeutic relationship and more. 

Every week students will be involved in role plays to become familiar with counselling tools presented in class. Because we want our students to be empowered and be able to implement what they learn, the staff and peers will give them positive feedbacks to help them grow in their skills.

The outreach phase is the field assignment. This provides a practical experience where the knowledge, skills, and character qualities of a Christian counsellor learned in the lecture phase are put into practice in a mission field setting. Students will find enriching cross-cultural opportunities and challenging experiences of working on a team at one of the ministry locations around the world. Also depending on where you will be doing your outreach, you will be involved in various ministries; focused on the poor, needy and marginalized people.

Prerequisites

The ideal applicant will have successfully completed a DTS. Students must be at least 18 years old.
